Experts concur that you are in more danger when driving a car than while flying, taking a train, or riding on a bus. That is simply because there are more cars – and careless people driving them – than other modes of transportation, and the roads are frequently very crowded. In any given year, there are more than 6 million accidents across the United States, and as many as 50,000 of those people are killed. That is a large number for sure, especially considering that most states have seat belt and speed limit laws in place.

Despite these restrictions, some people still opt not to wear their seat belts or follow the speed limits. Then of course we all must deal with those who drive drunk or erratically. In some cases, though, there is simply no one to blame; there are those unavoidable accidents that can end a life in the blink of an eye with no fault of anyone.

There are, however, ways to remain you safe in the event of an accident while you travel. Carry a cellular phone with you while driving, or at least have someone in the car who does. People who are injured in accidents will certainly fair much better if someone is able to call for help immediately after the incident.

Another way to help maintain safety is to avoid panicking regardless of the daunting circumstances. If you panic when observing an oncoming car, for example, you can actually do more harm to yourself. You must be able to keep a clear mind and in a split second think of the best solution to the abrupt problem. By staying calm, you increase the likelihood of quickly determining a safe alternative spot in which to swerve your car. Either that, or you’ll find you can brake at a much faster rate by maintaining a calm presence of mind.

Additionally, while driving – especially when in an unfamiliar destination or country – avoid any activities that may impair your ability to drive in a safe manner. Reckless driving, needless looks toward others in the vehicle while chatting, eating food, and putting on makeup while driving are just a few typical examples.

Another action to avoid is using your cell phone while driving. Cell phone usage is the cause of a great number of the accidents every year. Obviously you should never drink and drive either. Alcohol will significantly impair your ability to drive safely and defensively. Finally, learn the rules of the road. This is even more important when driving in a country like the United Kingdom where drivers are in the left, not right, lane.

Observe these rules and regulations so that you can do your part to prevent accidents that not only may ruin your otherwise great vacation, but also potentially maim or kill someone else.
