Tater03, if I remember correctly the big fire on the Star Princess was caused by someone smoking in their cabin.

And personally, I'd hate to hear that evacuation drill in the middle of the ocean.

I would think that they might consider it just because I would imagine their insurance premiums would be outragous but then maybe the people they might lose would be worse in the end.

Travelforever, when these smoking regulations come out, the cruise executives knew that they were going to get a lash back from European cruisers.

For American cruisers knew changes like these were just a matter of time. They've been slowly integrated into the no smoking policies by the current changes in their neighborhood bars, restaurants and places of work. So they have pretty much heard all there is to hear about the debate.

European cruisers though will find it difficult because there are equally great cruises like you mentioned operating with little restrictions to smoking.

Most of the ships have designated areas on the ships for smoking. Europeans are very much still into smoking and the lines tend to be a little more lenient. Certain European based lines such as Pullmantur (owned by RCCL but based in Spain) or Aida (German Line) has very little restrictions to smoking.

Tater03, in the last few years cruise lines have opted to have designated areas, and for North American cruisers non-smoking areas are nothing new to them.

However, there are a lot of european cruisers that take the same cruises and this is something they are not accustomed to.

See it wouldn't bother me not to smoke in my cabin. I think it would just be more healthier overall to the other passengers to make a certain area where you can smoke.

I think that this is an interesting thing. I know that my boyfriend would be really annoyed at not being able to smoke in his cabin.

I think that cruise ships should have some new smoking regulations. I think that cigarettes are a hazard that we need to be aware of, especially in such a confined space.

I see nothing wrong with designated smoking areas at all. This way you are aware of where people are smoking and it allows you to be more viligent when it comes to making sure that a fire doesn't start because of a lit cigerette left burning.
