A year after the fire that claimed a life on the Star Princess, cruise industry executives are imposing new smoking laws after it was concluded by british investigators that a smoldering cigarette caused the accident. Gene Sloan, a reporter with USA Today , says that stricter smoking rules, regulations and zero-tolerancy policy towards offenders can be expected as early as October on popular cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, Crystal Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Lines and Oceania.

As there is no industry standard as yet that regulates all cruise lines must adopt the same laws, you will need to check with each cruise line as to how it affects you if you are a smoker and have a cruise booked for later this year or next year. As these changes are not a total ban on smoking, most cruises will still have designated smoking areas such as the casino, cigar lounge or the bars. However, be forewarned, that smoking inside your cabin or on your balcony could be a thing of the past. Oceania Cruises is leading this trend, and they have adopted a zero-tolerance policy that will get you kicked off your cruise if caught smoking in non-designated areas.

Expect the new announcements to come with arguments on both side of the fence – cruisers for a smoke free environment and cruisers who want the priviledge of doing what they want to do while on their holiday.

How do you feel about these changes and which side will you take?
